Base Camp
Home for the week was Gulf Shores RV Park and Resort, located right off Galveston Bay. We somehow got an upgraded site when we arrived which was closer to the restroom too. Even though we didn’t explore or walk around this campground much, we still appreciated the beautiful pond in the middle and friendly neighbors.
Monday, March 17th
For St. Patricks day, the only festive thing we did was make corned beef and cabbage. But boy was it delicious. After chowing down we headed to Galveston for a little bit more sight seeing. We realized there wasn’t much more to see past what we experienced on Saturday so we moved on quickly. This lead to East Beach, where we walked in the sand and enjoyed a stunning sunset.

Tuesday, March 18th
With some research, I found out that the Houston Museum of Natural Science stayed open later on Tuesday nights and on top of that it had free admission. The faberge exhibit was the first one we explored and might have been my favorite. Next, we walked through a section about Quantum Chemistry and Astrophysics that was a little over my head but a more hands-on and fun way to learn about the topics. After that, we walked through the Hall of Paleontology (Zac’s favorite), the Cabinet of Curiosities exhibit, the Hall of Malacology and lastly the Hall of Gems and Minerals.

Wednesday, March 19th
Tonight we found some inexpensive tickets to the Houston Rodeo, the largest livestock auction and Rodeo in the world. Most of the events were very similar to the ones we saw in Cody, Wyoming, just on a much larger scale (if you forgot about that, here’s a link to Week 15).
This time, the best of the best were competing and it proved to be a thrilling show. When 9pm hit, the arena turned into a stage for an Old Dominion concert. Every night of the rodeo a different band was performing - from Post Malone to Luke Bryan, but we decided on Old Dominion based on timing and how many songs we knew by them.

Thursday, March 20th
Earlier in the week I found a free comedy show near Houston, so I booked us tickets and we headed to a nature center beforehand. It was already after sunset and we weren’t able to see much in the dark, so we kept this visit short with a quick walk. The comedy show ended up taking place in a house-converted-bar, called the Avant Garden, with the smallest audience ever. There were about 10 comedians who got on stage for the evening, over half were flops but we thought 3 of them were actually funny. This got us out of our comfort zone though since it was such a small audience and we weren’t able to just blend in with the crowd.

Friday, March 21st
I was craving a sweet treat after work today so we drove to the nearby city of Kemah after a neighbor had recommended the boardwalk there. We devoured our sundaes then walked the pier where there was live music and carnival rides. This was the perfect, slow-paced evening activity to end the week and allowed us to get to bed early to prepare for our Saturday departure.

Saturday, March 22nd
This was a typical, boring travel day for us. We left Gulf Shores and headed for our new campground without any hiccups.
Sunday, March 23rd
Our Sunday was spent in Fredericksburg, a quaint German town that the campground had recommended to us for a day trip. We walked the streets and explored the little shops - some of which had free beer inside. There was a boot store that we spent some time in, trying on our favorite styles and figuring out what we liked before realizing they were $500+. We even stopped at a little German restaurant for sausage and soft pretzels before heading to a winery in the area with a beautiful hill-country view.
